CUSTOMS OFFICERS FOIL ATTEMPT TO SMUGGLE IN DRUG WORTH RP6.1 BILLION
Tangerang, Banten, Oct 5 (ANTARA) - Customs and Excise officers at Soekarno-Hatta International airport have foiled an attempt to smuggle in 340 grams of crystal methamphetamine and 5,780 grams of amphetamine worth Rp6.1 billion.
The airport's customs and excise chief officer Rahmat Subagio said here on Sunday that the attempt to smuggle in the drug was made by two suspects, both foreigners coming from Taiwan.
"The two suspects are YLT (40) and CCW (40). They admitted they had come to Indonesia for the first time," he said.
He said that the two suspects flew in aboard of a Cathay Pacific airplane CX-777, and planned to distribute the crystal methamphetmine to someone in West Jakarta.
Based on examinations it was found that one of the two drug types which was white crystal powder was hid inside a food package that turned powder into amphetamine.
Based on the finding, the customs and excise officials and police cooperated and conducted further investigations which ended in the arrest of the two suspects.
The two suspects are accused of violating Law No. 5 / 1977 on Psychotropics which is punishable by 10 years in jail and a maximum fine of Rp300 million. They also violated Law No.23 / 1992 on Health.
