TRANS-JAVA TOLL ROAD URGENTLY NEEDED: DIRECTOR GENERAL
Jakarta, Oct 5 (ANTARA) - The government is of the view that Java now urgently needs a trans-Java toll road to accommodate high flows of traffic as seen in the current 2008 Idulfitri travelers, a senior official said.
"Therefore, we hope that the Kanci - Pejagan toll road section now being under construction by PT Semesta Marga Raya (SMR) would be completed before post-fasting month Idulfitri holidays in 2009," Road Construction Director General Harmanto Dardak, said here on Sunday.
He said that congestions often took place at the Kanci exit toll gate where there was a meeting point of various modes of transportation means from the highways in the northern part of Java.
The director general hoped that the construction of the Kanci - Pejagan section could be accelerated.
He said that if the road section was completed it would reduce the burden of the highways in the northern coast of Java (Pantura) because the traffic from the Palimanan-Kanci toll road could take a short cut road which connected Tegal with Cilacap.
"This will reduce the traffic flow and break it into the northern lane for the Tegal-semarang direction and the southern lane for the Purwakarta-Ajibarang-Yogyakarta direction, or through the middle lane to Wonosobo and Magelang.
The construction of the Kanci-Pejagaan toll road section has been in the fourth month and is expected to be completed in January 2009.
