DEFENSE MINISTRY, TNI SHOULD MAKE RI MILITARILY RESPECTED NATION: LEGISLATOR
Jakarta, Oct 4 (ANTARA)- The Defense Ministry and the Indonesian National Defense Forces (TNI) should take the initiative to make Indonesia a militarily respected nation and stop using their dependence on the state budget as an excuse for their low performance, a legislator said.
"This is my statement on the occasion of the TNI's 63rd anniversary on October 5, 2008. I mean, the Defense Ministry and TNI headquarters should take the initiative to make RI a nation with military clout without complaining about budget constraints," said Yusron Ihza Mahendra, vice chairman of the House of Representatives (DPR)'s Commission I, here on Saturday.
He made the remarks to ANTARA on the sidelines of an open house to mark the Idul Fitri 1429-H festivity at his house in South Jakarta, which was also attended by foreign diplomats among others from Japan, Taiwan, Malaysia and Singapore including the Japanese ambassador.
The Indonesian National Defense Forces (TNI) will celebrate its 63rd anniversary at Dermaga Ujung Naval Base in Surabaya, East Java, on October 14, 2008 instead of on October 5 due to the Idul Fitri holidays, head of TNI headquarters' public information division Col. CAJ Ahmad Yani Basuki said here Saturday.
"This is the second time for me to say that the defense ministry and TNI headquarters should take the initiative to overcome the minimum amount of the defense budget," Yusron said. The House Commission I oversees defense and foreign affairs.
He reminded that the defense ministry and TNI headquaters immediately make a breakthough to change their image of being a cost center into a profit center.
"Please do not wait any longer for a miracle of an immediate recovery of our economy, hoping to get a minimum targeted budget of Rp100 trillion in funds to be realized," he said.
Because after a decade of economic crises since 1998, there is no sign of 100 percent of the national economic recovery, he reminded, adding that this matter also leads to unability to step up the nation's prestige especially on the defense problem.
Citing example of the declining prestige, Yusron said that many foreign fishermen have been commiting illegal fishings which had caused trillion of rupiah in losses to the state every year," he added.***8***
