Mottaki urges Japan to give way to Iran's UNSC membership

United Nations, New York, Oct 4, IRNA - Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki said here Friday that Tehran expects Tokyo to give up the race over winning non-permanent seat of the UN Security Council.

"Tehran expects Japan, as a friend country, to observe justice and
give up competition with Iran over a non-permanent seat in the UN
Security Council," Mottaki told IRNA before leaving New York.

Iran has in the 60 years of the UN activity only once turned the UN
Security Council member and raised the membership bid since 12 years
ago. This year, there will be vote in the UN General Assembly on the
bid.

Japan, which has in the period been the UN Security Council member
repeatedly, competes Iran in this stage.

Mottaki said Iran's membership bid poses a new challenge to the
international system's structure.

He said that if Iran becomes non-permanent member of the UN Security
Council, it will definitely take seriously the stances and rights of
the countries, including NAM and the developing states, whom it will
represent in the Council Council.
