NUCLEAR TECHNOLOGY ALREADY ENJOYED IN 23 PROVINCES
Pamekasan, East Java province, Oct. 4 (ANTARA) - Head of engineering division of the National Atomic Energy Agency Bambang Galung said that the benefits of nuclear energy is now already enjoyed by people in 23 provinces in Indonesia.
"This actually means that nuclear energy is highly beneficial to the Indonesian people because it has many applications," Bambang said in Pamekasan on Friday.
Rejections by some people against nuclear energy was actually cause by their ignorance of its benefits. They, Bambang said, tended to think only of its negative impact.
"This means that our people tended only to look at one aspect of nuclear energy, without considering its positive aspect," Bambang added.
According to Bambang Galung, the benefits of nuclear technology which is already enjoyed by the people in 23 provinces, include food perservation, water source detection, rice cultivation, and medical treatment.
"In East Java, we have already entered Bangkalan, Sampang and Sumenep. But not yet in Pamekasan because the regency administration has yet to make an application. Nuclear application will be given only on request," he said.
In Bangkalan nuclear technology is applied in the detection of water sources in villages hit by serious drought. In Sampang and Sumenep this technology is applied to rice cultivation. And in Sumenep, BATAN is now even cooperating with Universitas Wiraraja, a private university in the eastern end of Madura island.
