THREE HUNDRED HOUSES PREPARED FOR SUCCESSFUL ATHLETES

Pamekasan, E Java, Oct 3 (ANTARA) - The Youth and Sports Affairs Minister has prepared 300 housing units as rewards for Indonesian athletes who perform exceptionally this year, a sports affairs ministry official said.

"This is a kind of prize designed for athletes who are able to win gold medals, including their coaches," Dr Yunus Zulhairi, a deputy to the youth and sports affairs minister, said here on Friday.
The houses are prepared for successful athletes in an effort to motivate and encourage them to train hard so that they would make good achievements, he said.
He said that the state so far tended to pay less attention to athletes, though they had brought fame to the nation. It even tended to forget them.
Thus, with this housing program, it was expected that athletes in various sports branches would be able to regain the glory their predecessors once had before the reforms era, according to Zulhairi.
"We are trying to improve the country's sports achievement by offering such a prize to athletes," he said.
The sports and youth affairs minister did not offer housing only but also scholarships for successful athletes to continue their studies to higher institutions.
The value of the scholarships ranged between Rp10 million and Rp30 million.
"The value of scholarships for strata-1 (S1) study program is Rp10 million, while those for S2 and S3 programs are Rp20 million and Rp30 million respectively," he added.
