Turkish FM Davutoglu warns France about Armenian bill

PARIS (A.A) - January 23, 2012 - Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu warned France, one more time, that it should not adopt the bill which criminalizes the denial of Armenian allegations regarding 1915 incidents. Speaking to a French TV on Sunday, Davutoglu said that if France adopted the bill, Turkey's sanctions against this country would be continuous. Upper house of the French parliament is set to discuss on Monday the bill which penalizes denial of the Armenian allegations with a prison term of one year and a fine of 45,000 euro.  The Senate could vote to uphold an earlier parliamentary committee decision and drop the bill off the agenda without even debating it. A similar bill -- proposed by the Socialist Party -- was approved in 2006 by the lower house but the Senate rejected to debate the bill last May when it upheld the committee's decision back then. Davutoglu said that the bill was against human rights, adding, "it is time for French intellectuals and senators to defend the freedom of speech which is one of our common values".
