Minister of Culture Inaugurates Bourgeois's "Conscious and Unconscious" Exhibition
Doha, January 19 (QNA) - HE Minister of Culture, Arts and Heritage Dr. Hamad Bin Abdulaziz Al-Kuwari opened today the first Middle East solo exhibition of the works of late French American artist Louise Bourgeois (1911-2010). Titled "Conscious and Unconscious", the exhibition is organized by Qatar Museums Authority (QMA) and lasts from January 20 to June 1.
HE Minister of Culture, Arts and Heritage thanked QMA for hosting such excellent works. "This exhibition, where Doha celebrates one of the world's plastic art pioneers, extends a bridge of culture and civilizational communication between the different cultures, and offers tasters of art and intellectuals a cultural service especially when it comes to world-acclaimed experiences in the different fields," Dr. Al-Kuwari said.
QMA Chairperson of the Board of Trustees HE Sheikha Al Mayassa bint Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani said in the event's catalogue opening speech that she met Bourgeois in New York a few weeks before she passed away. Sheikha Al Mayassa added that Bourgeois is one the modern art pioneers who devoted her life to art and giving.
Born in Paris, Bourgeois graduated from the Sorbonne in 1935 before moving to the U.S. in 1938. Living almost a century, Bourgeois is best known for her contributions to modern and contemporary art. Her spider structures resulted in her being nicknamed the Spiderwoman. She is recognized today as the founder of confessional art. (QNA)
