Thai PM to visit Philippines

BANGKOK, January 17 (TNA) - Thai Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra will pay an official visit to the Philippines on January 19, her eighth trip to neighbouring countries in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) after taking office in August 2011. Government Spokeswoman Thitima Chaisaeng publicly announced Premier Yingluck's scheduled visit to the Philippines Tuesday, saying that the one-day trip is aimed to, among others, convince Manila Thailand’s potential to be a regional base of rice supply for the Philippines. According to the government spokesperson, the Pheu Thai premier has ordered the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to work with relevant ministries to gather information to be used for her discussions with Manila on the key issue. The Philippines is now the world's largest rice importer, purchasing some 2.4 million tonnes of rice from overseas markets annually, about 1.5 million tonnes of which are normally ordered from Vietnam.
