SINGAPORE TO OPEN CONSULATE GENERAL IN BATAM

Batam, Oct 2 (ANTARA) - The Singapore government plans to open a consulate general's office in Batam in Riau Islands province in December, a Singaporean diplomat said.

"Batam in Riau Islands province is located near Singapore and therefore we deem it necessary to open a consulate general's office there," the Singaporean diplomat, Raj Kumar, said here on Thursday.

He said the establishment of the consulate general in Batam was related to the implementation of a Special Economic Zone project in cooperation with Indonesia.

Raj Kumar said the opening of the consulate general in Batam was expected to strengthen the relations between the two countries, especially with Riau Islands province (Kepri).

He said preparations for the opening of the consulate general in Batam were now underway.

"We hope the office can be opened in December," Raj Kumar said when accompanying Singapore's senior foreign minister in an Idul Fitri call on the governor of Riau Islands province.
He said the Singapore government wanted to implement the Special Economic Zone project in cooperation with Indonesia in the islands of Batam, Bintan and Karimun.
