ACTING DISTRICT HEADS ADVISED NOT TO RUN IN REGIONAL ELECTIONS
Manado, Oct 2 (ANTARA) - A number of North Sulawesi provincial councillors have asked the acting district heads of Bolmong Selatan (Bolsel) and Bolmong Timur (Boltim) not to run for office in regional elections.
"The local people have entrusted the Bolsel and Boltim district administration's affairs to the acting district heads for two years, and therefore they should remain in their present positions and not to run for office in regional chief elections," Novi Mokobombang, a North Sulawesi councillor from Bolaang Mongondong (Bolmong), said here on Thursday.
Earlier on Tuesday, September 30, 2008, Home Affairs Minister Mardiyanto inaugurated two newly formed districts, Bolmong Timur (Boltim) and Bolmong Selatan (Bolsel), in North Sulawesi.
Accompanied by North Sulawesi Governor SH Sarundajang, local community figures and government officials, the home affairs minister also installed Kandoli Mokodongan as acting district chief of Boltim and Arudji Mongilong as acting district chief of Bolsel.
The two new districts were formed by subdividing the former Bolaang Mongondow district - an act approved by the House of Repreentatives (DPR) in June 2008.
On the occasion, the minister urged the peoples in the two autonomous districts to assist the government in launching various development programs aimed at improving the local people's welfare.
Mardiyanto said the presence of the two new districts in North Sulawesi was to facilitate public services and to encourage equitable development, and therefore he expressed hope the acting district heads would work for one year and focus on their given tasks.
The minister said the acting district heads were expected to be responsible for running the administration, preparing the administrative outline, forming the legislature and facilitating the local leadership election in coordination with the North Sulawesi governor, the parent district administration, and the central government.
"It is expected that the new acting district heads will not set up unwieldy administrative structures which in the long run will have a negative impact on the districts' finances," the minister said.
Meanwhile, another North Sulawesi councillor, Djitro Tamengge, said here on Thursday Boltsel and Boltim were parts of the country's disadvantaged regions and thus the acting district heads should make serious efforts to develop their respective regions.
"Since most of the people in the two new districts still live under the poverty line, they desperately need help to improve their welfare," Djitro Tamengge said.
