QUALITY OF RI MUSLIMS' RELIGIOUS FAITH NOW IN WORLD SPOTLIGHT
Jakarta, Oct 1 (ANTARA) - As Muslims make up the majority of the Indonesian population, the quality of their religious faith is currently in the world community's serious spotlight, former Constitutional Court chairman Jimly Asshiddiqie said.
Jimly made the statement in his sermon after Idul Fitri prayers at Al Azhar Grand Mosque here to mark the end of the Ramadan fasting month at 7 on Wednesday morning. The prayer service was led by KH Ahmad Chotib SQ.
Before around 10,000 people who packed the Al Azhar mosque, Jimly said in his sermon on "Islam and Legal Strength" that Muslims in Indonesia had become part of a serious problem because the quality of their religious faith was being questioned.
"The crime of corruption would never have flourished in Indonesia if our religious faith was good because then Muslims would not commit it," Jimly said.
He said the Muslim community in Indonesia should think whether the religious service they have been performing so far to honor Allah was in truth or not.
"Mosques are packed with thousands of people every Friday, and our hajj pilgrims are the greatest in number every year, our religious traditions and rituals are kept from the rising of the sun to its going down, but why do we fail to reflect it in our everyday behavior?", Jimly asked.
In his sermon, therefore, he called on all Muslims across the country to become the pioneer in the effort to uphold the law in Indonesia.
Jimly said Indonesia was a law-abiding country but ironically it was in the legal institutions that the various problems arose.
"Our law enforcers have yet to be good examples for us to follow," he said, adding that a great number of the leaders in the country have failed to abide by the existing law.
