INDONESIANS OBSERVE IDUL FITRI IN PEACE
Jakarta, Oct 1 (ANTARA) - Millions of people in Indonesia, the world's largest Muslim nation, peacefully took part in morning prayer on Wednesday before celebrating the end of the month-long Ramadan fasting month with family and friends to mark the Idul Fitri Islamic holiday.
Mosques in Jakarta, Bekasi, Bogor, Tangerang and Depok (Jabotabek) were packed with multitude of people performing payer in peace to mark the end of fasting month, and then visited friends and relatives to follow the Idul Fitri tradition of seeking forgiveness for their past misdeeds.
Jakarta's main Istiqlal Mosque was also packed with more than 200,000 people including President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, Vice President Jusuf Kalla, and the United Indonesia cabinet ministers.
Security around the mosque was tightened as dozens of police and military personnel were seen on guard outside the mosque yard while the presidential security guards (Paspampres) ensure the security inside.
The presidential security guards also guarded every entry gate of the mosque and the people who would like to get inside had to go through the gate with metal detector.
While thousands of Muslim congregations were performing the Idulfitri prayer inside the Istiqlal Mosque, hundred of poor people were also waiting outside with importunate pleas of alms.
Led by Istiqlal Mosque leader Khusni Abdullah, the prayer proceeded peacefully before Religious Affairs Minister Maftuh Basyuni delivered Idulfitri sermon.
As the timing of Idulfitri festivity depends on the sighting of the new moon, several thousands adherents of Hizbut Tahrir Indonesia Islamic organization in various parts of Indonesia observed it on Tuesday, September 30, 2008.
In Jakarta, hundreds of the organization's members performed Idulfitri prayers, led by clerics M Hijrah Dahlan and Ihsan Salam at the Crown Plaza parking area on Prof Soepomo street at 7 on Tuesday morning, while similar prayers were also held at the same time at 6.30 on Tuesday morning in the cities and town in West Java, Central Java, East Java, Medan, Padang, Bangka Belitung, Lampung, Banjarmasin, Makassar, Pare-pare and in the other parts of the country.
