U.S. spy goes under trial for the first time in Iran

Azerbaijan, Baku, Dec. 27 / Trend S.Isayev, T. Jafarov/
Today, at the Iran's Revolutionary Court 15, a trial has been held on Amir Mirzai Hekmami, who has been accused of spying, Fars reported.
The court was carried out under the supervision of judge Abulfazal Salavati.
Amir Mirzai Hekmati confessed he had been sent to infiltrate Iranian intelligence services on state TV a week earlier.
During the hearing at the court, the prosecutor made a statement, and after him, Hekmati's lawyer spoke out with his mind, expressing disagreements within the case. Prosecutor noted that lawyer's disagreements would not be considered by the court.
Early reports said Hekmati joined the U.S. military in 2001, and served in the Marines, where he was an Arabic interpreter.
Iran's government has repeatedly accused the United States of carrying out covert intelligence operations in order to undermine it.
In May, Tehran claimed it had detained a network of 30 CIA operatives, saying they had been involved in espionage and sabotage. Couple of weeks ago Iran indicted 15 people on charges of spying for America and Israel.
