PONTIANAK TO HAVE A SUNDIAL TO ATTRACT TOURISTS
Pontianak, Indonesia, Sept 30 (ANTARA) - Pontianak planned to build a sundial and telescope in the Equatorial Monument to attract tourists, the Pontianak mayor said here Tuesday.
"The plan is meant to attract tourists to visit Pontianak where they would be able to see the two culminations on March 21-23 and September 21-23. The tourists can also watch nature phenomena through the sundial and sun telescope," Pontianak Mayor Buchary Abdurrachman said.
Abdurrahman also said the sundial will be 71 meters high, and the 76 billion rupiah structure will be built in Tugu Khatulistiwa area.
The sundial and the sun telescope will not only serve as a tgourist attraction but also can be used for scientific research purposes.
"We can use the telescope as an early warning of global warming," Abdurrahman said.
With the sundial and the sun telescope, Abdurrahman hoped, local as well as foreign tourists will come to Pontianak.
Pontianak is a city in South Kalimantan province known as Kota Khatulistiwa (Equatorial City) because the equator pased right through it.
During the culminations, the stick of the sundial will cast no shadown on its panel, because the sun is exactly above it.
"Pontianak is the only city in the world passed by the equator, that is what makes Pontianak so special and unique," he said.
