HUNDREDS OF BUSES IDLE AS IDUL FITRI TRAVELERS FLOW DIMINISHES

Jakarta, Sept 30 (ANTARA) - Hundreds of empty intercity and inter-province (AKAP) buses formed long lines at the Pulogadung bus terminal in East Jakarta on Tuesday as the number of people making Idul Fitri trips to their home towns or villages had dropped sharply.

"There are few travelers today," terminal chief Pardjiman told ANTARA here Tuesday.

Until 2 p.m, only about 39 buses had departed from the terminal with about 341 passangers.

"Most of the buses are only partly filled with passengers," Pardjiman said, adding that the low number of travelers had idled up to 250 buses.

"Moreover, the number of arriving buses is exceeding than that of departing one," Pardjiman said.

Therefore, the terminal controllers had contacted the bus companies not to send any more buses to Pulogadung.

"This is not like we've predicted," he said.

The number of buses parked in line at the AKAP pool of Pulogadung terminal ran into the hundreds. Some of the buses were also parked along the entrance and outer lanes. This caused a traffic problem at the terminal.
