VP CANCELS TRIP TO HOMETOWN
Jakarta, Sept 30 (ANTARA) - Vice President Jusuf Kalla canceled a plan to visit his hometown Makassar in South Sulawesi in order to meet an invitation to an UNESCO award presentation event in France.
The award is reportedly to be given by UNESCO for services to promote the education of Acehnese children.
"But I'm not the one to receive the award. It is for my friend, Martti Ahtasaari," the vice president said here Tuesday.
Martti Ahtasaari is a former president of Finland who actively facilitated the peace process in Nangroe Aceh Darussalam (NAD) province. He also served as mediator in peace talks between the Indonesian government and the Free Aceh Movement (GAM) in 2005.
To a suggestion he should also receive an award for his role in solving the armed conflict in Aceh, Kalla said he had only worked for peace and not to get an award. "Just let God judge my work," he said.
