Turkish FM says no solid steps yet in Syria over Arab League initiative

KONYA (A.A) - December 19, 2011 - Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu on Monday said Syrian government had yet to take any "concrete steps" over an Arab League initiative which Damascus said it had signed earlier today.
"There are news reports originating from Damascus but there are no concrete steps taken so far. It would be positive development if Syria accepted the plan by negotiating it with the Arab League, not by putting forward new conditions," Davutoglu told reporters in the central province of Konya.
Syrian Foreign Minister Walid al-Moallem has said the country would allow in Arab League observers as part of peace deal that aims to end a 9-month-old political turmoil.
The United Nations says has the violent government crackdown in Syria on pro-democracy protests has killed at least 5,000 people.
