Lottery winner arrested for theft
JINHAE, South Korea, Sept. 29 (Yonhap) -- A 28-year-old man who formerly won 1.9 billion won (US$1.6 million) in a national lottery was arrested and charged with 18 counts of theft, police said Monday.
The man, identified only by his last name Hwang, was picked up by police in
Jinhae, a city just west of the southern port city of Busan, according to police
officials.
Since April, Hwang and his friend from a juvenile reformatory, who is also being
charged, have stolen precious metals amounting to 5 million won from jewelry
stores around cities in South and North Gyeongsang Provinces, including Jinhae,
Daegu and Busan, they said.
It was later discovered that Hwang was a winner of South Korea's nationwide
lottery two years ago.
He reportedly told police after his arrest that he used his winnings to buy a
shop and a taxi cab for his father and he had spent rest of the prize money.
