M'SIAN EDUCATION MINISTER TO ARTICULATE VIEWS AT UNESCO
KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 29 (Bernama) -- Education Minister Hishammuddin
Hussein is expected to attend the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (Unesco) Executive Board Meeting in Paris next week where he will articulate his ideas and views on youth, terrorism and Islam.
In fact, he will "sacrifice" his Hari Raya celebration as he will be
leaving for the French capital on Thursday, the second day of Aidilfitri, to
ensure a
well-oiled preparation for the vital meeting, which will begin next Monday.
Being a member of the Unesco executive board, his take on matters which are
relevant locally and globally will help Unesco address the various issues.
The meeting will also serve as a platform for Malaysia to present its views
on the Unesco Director-General's report regarding the implementation of the
world body's programmes and achievements in 2006 and 2007.
The views of Hishammuddin, who is also president of the Southeast Asian
Ministers of Education Organisation (Seameo), will carry a lot of weight at the
United Nation (UN) agency as he is not only conveying the voice of Malaysia but
also that of the region.
He is expected to highlight and share opinions on the importance of
education for all, quality education, science and technology and higher
education.
He is also expected to have a private meeting with Unesco Director-General
Koichiro Matsuura on the sidelines of the meeting.
The 58-member board meets twice a year to examine the work programme for
the organisation and corresponding budget estimates. Unesco has 193 members.
Hishammuddin was elected to Unesco's executive board with the highest
number of votes (147) in the Asia Pacific group at the world body's 34th general
conference last October.
Hishammuddin, who will be accompanied by his wife, Tengku Marsilla
Tengku Abdullah, on the week-long trip to Paris, will meet Malaysians studying,
working and staying there as well as attend a Hari Raya gathering at the
Malaysian embassy.
