S. Korea seeks better-organized food screening amid melamine scare
SEOUL, Sept. 29 (Yonhap) -- Reeling from the growing Chinese food scare, South Korea plans to tighten its food safety inspection process by integrating its complex screening systems, officials said Monday.
Seoul recently banned imports and recalled Chinese-made food products containing
powered milk after detecting traces of melamine, an industrial chemical, in six
brands.
The toxic chemical was recently found to have been added to Chinese baby formula,
triggering a massive food scare in the region. The tainted milk product has
killed at least four infants and caused some 53,000 others in China to fall ill.
"The current screening process is dealt with by two different ministries which
make the process inefficient and insufficient," a ruling party official said.
"The party and the government agreed to integrate the multi-format screening."
