ZOOM! HARI RAYA MIDNITE SALE JOHOR BAHARU A SUCCESS

JOHOR BAHARU (Malaysia), Sept 29 (Bernama) -- Tourism Malaysia's "Zoom! Hari Raya Midnite Sale Johor Baharu" held at Plaza Angsana here Saturday night was a success when it attracted thousands of people, including Singaporeans.

The one-night experimental event from 10pm to 2am, aggressively promoted
here and in Geylang, Singapore, caused a bumper-to-bumper traffic jam at the
adjacent flyover, with motorists spending up to 45 minutes to reach the parking
lot of the plaza.

Obviously happy with the success, Tourism Minister Azalina Othman
Said said such an event would be extended to other festivities to boost the
tourism industry, which is the country's second highest income earner.

"Judging from the response, I think this event is a success and we are
already making a plan to do it for other festivities in the future," said
Azalina after opening the event.

Hence, she called on the relevant authorities to ease the entry of
Singaporean tourists to Johor Baharu during the period.

She said a more open approach, as implemented among the European Union
member countries, should be encouraged but without compromising the country's
security.

"This can be done for a specific event for a limited period," she
said.

About 100 stalls selling festivity delicacies were set up in and outside
the
Plaza Angsana building, with shopowners and stallowners offering a discount of
up to 75 per cent.

The event was simultaneously held at the Kotaraya and Aeon Tebrau City
shopping complexes.
