Pakistani Taliban impose fine on 'unveiled' women
Islamabad, Sep 28 (PTI) The Pakistani Taliban have imposed fines on women who do not wear veils in the suburbs of the northwestern city of Peshawar and some areas of the restive tribal region.
Local residents said the Taliban had first warned people
about the fines on September 15.
The Taliban said they would impose a fine of Rs. 10,000
on any woman not wearing a veil and the drivers of public
transport vehicles carrying unveiled women, the Daily Times
newspaper reported on Sunday.
A resident of Kas Korrona area said he had paid Rs.
10,000 to the Taliban for securing the release of his wife,
who was held by the militants after she violated the "veil
law".
The Pakistani Taliban in the North West Frontier Province
and adjoining tribal areas have burnt down and blown up dozens
of girls' schools.
They have also targeted barber shops and outlets selling
music C.Ds. and films, which they say are "un-Islamic". PTI
