Iran criticizes Security Council for politicizing nuclear program

New York, Sept 28, IRNA - Iran on Saturday criticized the Security Council for passing a new resolution as an effort to politicize the technical dispute between Iran and the International Atomic Energy Agency.

"It is unfortunate, and indeed another unpleasant surprise for the
international community, that yet unwarrantedly and unnecessarily
called to act in a hastily manner on an issue that by no stretch of
logic, law or justification falls within the Council's purview, and
poses no threat to international peace and security," Iranian Mission
to the United Nations said in a statement.

"The Security Council's engagement in, and actions against, the
Islamic Republic of Iran's peaceful nuclear program, including today's
resolution, lack not only fairness and objectivity, but also relevance
and lawfulness.

"Such moves are unwarranted and undoubtedly unconstructive. What the
sponsors of today's resolution need to do is to attract the trust of
the Iranian nation through constructive cooperation and collective
commitment, rather than adding to our nation's mistrust by taking
hasty and unlawful measures.

"As we have continuously stressed on various occasions, and as the
concrete facts on the ground clearly suggest, Iran's nuclear program
has been, is and will remain absolutely peaceful.

"Regardless of such unjustifiable actions as the one taken by the
Council today, the Iranian nation will remain determined to exercise
its inalienable rights for peaceful uses of nuclear technology," the
statement said.

Iran and the IAEA signed a Modality Agreement last year to resolve the
outstanding issues in a specified period of time.

The Agency put forward eight questions and undertook to put an end to
controversy over Iranian nuclear program.

Iran provided the agency with answers and IAEA Director General
Mohamed ElBaradei declared afterwards that "the answers support the
IAEA documentation" verifying non-diversion of the national nuclear
program.

Shortly after settlement of the outstanding issues, the United States
fabricated another allegation so-called laptop or alleged studies.

Iran dismissed the new charge and said that it does not fall within
context of the Modality Agreement it signed with the UN specialized
agency and that Iran is not responsible for fresh allegations the US
is making one after the other.

Chairman of Majlis Commission on National Security and Foreign Policy
Alaeddin Boroujerdi told IRNA that the Modality Agreement aimed to put
an end to the controversy over Iranian nuclear program and that Iran
has not opened a gate for the agency to bring up allegations one after
the other.

"By the Modality Agreement, the two parties have undertaken to
terminate the dispute and not to make it an open-ended matter,"
Boroujerdi said protesting the so-called laptop case brought up by the
United States.

Iranian Ambassador to IAEA Ali Asghar Soltanieh said that the US is
refusing to present the laptop as evidence for its claim of alleged
studies saying that Iran may acquire know-how from it, the question is
that "how do you allege it belongs to Iran when you do not want to
present it as evidence?"
However, Majlis Speaker Ali Larijani said that Iran has responded to
eight unfounded accusations of the United States so far and is capable
to do so in case of the new fabrication of laptop too.
