S. Korean president to hold summit with Russian leader next week
SEOUL, Sept. 27 (Yonhap) -- South Korean President Lee Myung-bak will hold a
summit meeting with his Russian counterpart next week to discuss key economic
issues and North Korea's nuclear ambitions, the government said Saturday.
The presidential office said that Lee, who will leave for Moscow on Sunday, plans
to release a joint communique with President Dmitry Medvedev, calling for a
peaceful resolution to North Korea's nuclear ambitions.
The second summit meeting by the two leaders scheduled for Monday is also
expected to touch on expanding closer bilateral cooperation in energy, resources,
industrial technologies and space exploration.
South Korean businessmen who are to accompany Lee, meanwhile, plan to sign
various deals and memorandums of understanding that can set the stage for joint
energy, industry and scientific endeavors.
Lee plans to meet Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin during his visit and tour
a cosmodrome, as well as visiting St. Petersburg before returning home on
Wednesday.
The trip to Russia completes Lee visit to the four major global powers and
neighbors that play a key role in events on the Korean Peninsula.
The president who was elected to office in late February visited the United
States and Japan in April and China in May.
