SOME 265 JUVENILE CONVICTS IN MEDAN TO GET SENTENCE CUTS

Medan, Sept 27 (ANTARA) - Some 265 juvenile inmates of Tanjung Gusta correctional institute in Medan, North Sumatra, will get special sentence remissions to mark the Islamic Idul Fitri holiday, prison chief warden Siswanto said here on Saturday.

He said 16 of them would walk free on the first day of Idul Fitri because the sentence remissions would also mean the expiry of their jail terms.
Siswanto said he had earlier proposed special remission for 322 juvenile inmates to the Justice and Human Rights Ministry (Depkum Ham) but the ministry agreed to grant the sentence cuts to only 265.

Of the number, 134 would get a remission of 15 days, 115 a remission of one month while the remaining 16 would walk free.

Prisoners in Indonesia who have shown good conduct, except those on death row or serving life sentences, are traditionally granted sentence cuts of up to six months on the occasion of two annual events : Independence Day and Idul Fitri or Christmas.
