Smooth change of guard on anvil in cricket administration
Mumbai, Sep 26 (PTI) Indian cricket is all set to set
sail on fresh waters here Saturday with a smooth change of
guard at the helm when President Sharad Pawar steps down and
hands over the mantle for the next three years to man-in-
waiting Shashank Manohar at the BCCI's 79th A.G.M.
Nagpur-based lawyer Manohar, the Vice-President from
Central Zone representing Vidarbha Cricket Association
(V.C.A.), became the President-elect to take over the reins
from Pawar at the last A.G.M.
The tough-talking Manohar would be assisted in his
functions as secretary by current treasurer N. Srinivasan of
Tamil Nadu who is set to be declared elected unopposed to the
important post Saturday, according to B.C.C.I. sources.
Sanjay Jagdale of M.P.C.A. and M. P. Pandove of Punjab
C.A. are two other key office bearers who are to be declared
elected officially Satuday as the Board's new Joint Secretary
and Treasurer respectively.
Outgoing chief Pawar, after day-long parleys at the
Board's headquarters, said as per the B.C.C.I.'s constitution
the names of the elected candidates would be announced only at
the A.G.M. after revealing that the Board had received only
one nomination for each of these posts as well as the posts of
five Vice-Presidents.
"Friday unfortunately we received only one nomination
for the post of Secretary, Joint Secretary, Treasurer and five
Vice-Presidents (each). Their names would be announced only
Saturday at the A.G.M. as per the constitutional procedure,"
Pawar told reporters.
The Vice-Presidents who are to be declared elected
unopposed are: Shivlal Yadav (Hyderabad, South), Chirayu Amin
(Baroda, West), Arindam Ganguly (TripUra, East), Arun Jaitley
(Delhi, North) and Lalit Modi (Rajasthan, Central).
Of these Amin and Modi are currently Vice-Presidents
though the latter represented North Zone and will now be from
Central following Manohar's elevation as the new President.
Hyderabad's Yadav, a former Test off spinner, is to
replace Dayanand Narvekar of Goa and Jaitley would come in
place of Modi from North while Ganguly is to replace Rajeev
Shukla from East.
The concept of paid selectors is also to be set in
motion at the A.G.M. Each member of the senior selection
panel, to be appointed Saturday instead of being elected,
would be paid Rs. 25 lakh annually. The appointed junior panel
members would get Rs. 15 lakh each annually as honorarium.
The senior selection panel is poised to see a complete
revamp with former Test captain Krishnamachari Srikkanth at
the helm instead of incumbent Chief Selector Dilip Vengsarkar.
Srikkanth (South Zone) is likely to have as
co-selectors his former India teammate, Yashpal Sharma
(North), ex-Test leg spinner Narendra Hirwani (Central),
Surendra Bhave (West) and Raja Venkat (East), according to the
sources.
This, if effected, would see a totally new-look senior
selection panel in place. The outgoing senior selection panel
comprised Vengsarkar (West), Venkatapathy Raju (South), Ranjib
Biswal (East), Sanjay Jagdale (Central) and Bhupinder Singh Sr
(North).
