BANSER DENIES INVOLVEMENT IN CLASH WITH FPI
Jakarta, Sept 24 (ANTARA) - The Jakarta branch of Banser, the Nahdlatul Ulama (NU)'s 'storm-troopers' wing, has denied that its members were involved in a clash between FPI (Islam Defenders' Front) and the National Alliance for Freedom of Faith and Religion (AKBB) activists in front of the Central Jakarta District Court building on Thursday (Sept 23).
Avianto Muhtadi, chairman of Banser's Jakarta branch, said here Friday he had never instructed Banser members to join and help AKKBB activists in the clash.
"We have never given an instruction to our members to join the fighting ," he said.
He said it seemed some 'irresponsible' elements wearing Banser shirts had take part in the confrontation.
"We deplore the action of those irresponsible elements in instigating other people by wearing Banser's t-shirts," said Avianto who is also the son of Indonesian ambassador for Qatar, HM Rozy Munir.
In Thursday's incident, three FPI members suffered wounds from sharp weapons. An FPI lawyer said armed elements wore Banser uniforms.
