ANKARA (A.A) - November 10, 2011 - Turkish dailies mostly covered in their Thursday issues the 73rd anniversary of the demise of the founder of modern Republic of Turkey, Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, and the powerful earthquake that measured 5.6 on the Richter scale in eastern province of Van on Wednesday night.
Covering the 73rd anniversary of the demise of Ataturk, Vatan daily quoted Turkish President Abdullah Gul as saying "Ataturk's ideas and loyalty to peace and humanity have earned the respect of the whole globe". Vatan daily also quoted Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan as saying "November 10, 1938 was not the end of an era but rather the beginning of a period in which Ataturk's legacy, the Republic of Turkey, would become prosperous". Sabah daily quoted the Turkish government's declaration on November 10, 1938 that "Ataturk will always live in the history of the Turks and their hearts" on its front page.
Commenting on the powerful quake that measured 5.6 on the Richter scale in eastern province of Van on Wednesday night, Yeni Safak, Turkiye, Hurriyet and Milliyet dailies emphasized that Van experienced a serious disaster for the second time in only two weeks. These dailies noted that 27 buildings, including two hotels, collapsed during last night's aftershock. According to the dailies, at least 50 people are still under the rubble waiting to be rescued.
