BUS-PICKUP COLLISION ON PANTURA HIGHWAY KILLS EIGHT, INJURES FIVE

Cikampek, West Java, Sept. 26 (ANTARA) - A collision between a bus and a pickup truck killed eight people and injured five others on the northern Java coastal highway (Pantura) at Sukamandi, West Java, in the wee hours of Friday.

"The accident happened at around three o'clock in the morning, involving 'Puspajaya' Bus serving the Cirebon-Lampung route and an L-300 pickup car," Purwakarta Police Chief Senior Commissiner Djodi Roseto said here on Friday.
Roseto believed the accident occurred because of carelessness on the bus driver's part.
"The highway is prone to traffic accidents. Jasa Marga will soon set up a separation line on the road," the policeman said.
Nasir Hakam, a spokesman of state traffic accident insurance company PT Jasa Rahardja, who was present on the occasion, said the company would pay insurance money to the victims.
Each dead victim would get Rp25 million, and an injured victim would receive a maximum of Rp10 million to cover the cost of medical treatment.
The company earlier presented an ambulance and 1,500 traffic cones to the National Police to help police manage traffic during this year's Eid Fitr holidays.
Muslims in Indonesia and other countries will celebrate Eid Fitr on October 1 and 2, 2008, prompting them to return to their hometowns to be with their relatives. The number of home-bound travelers in Indonesia this year is estimated to reach around 15 million.
