NAVY FOILS ATTEMPT TO SMUGGLE IN 200 LAPTOPS FROM MALAYSIA
Jakarta, Sept 26 (ANTARA) - The Indonesian Navy in Batam has confiscated 218 laptops of various trade marks which were to be smuggled from Malaysia into Indonesia by Motor Vessel 'King Bee 2" of Batam's PT Putra Kundur, a navy officer said.
Commandant of Batam Naval Base Colonel Muhammad Faisal said in press statement on Thursday that the ship --owned by Abeng and had a tonnage of 158 GT-- was arrested in the eastern waters of Pulau Sambu.
"The wooden motor vessel, with Indonesian flags, was carrying 218 laptops of various trade marks such as Toshiba, Acer, HP and Compaq, when it was arrested. We believe the goods were to be smuggled in," he said.
Faisal said that the ship had sailed from Batu Pahat port of Malaysia through the Malacca Straits, Nipah and Tolop waters to the Pulau Sambu waters.
"Actually, this is not new. There are allegedly many ships carrying illegal goods from Malaysia and sailing through the Pulau Sambu waters to smuggle them into Indonesia," he added.
He said that ships usually carrying illegal goods tried to hide them or placed them under cargoes which were registered at the manifest and had official documents.
The King Bee 2 ship with its skipper and 12 crew members is now held custody by the Batam Naval Base for further legal process, he said.
