AIR FORCE TO DEMONSTRATE TWO SUKHOIS ON TNI'S 63RD ANNIVERSARY
Jakarta, Sept 26 (ANTARA) - The Indonesian Air Force is ready to showcase two of its Russian-made Sukhoi jet fighters during a program to mark the 63rd anniversary of the Indonesian Defense Forces (TNI) at Dermaga Ujung Air Base in Surabaya, East Java, on October 14, 2008, a spokesman said.
"We are ready for the event and are making preparations for the TNI anniversary," Flight Major Iko Putro, Squadron II commandant of the Sultan Hasanuddin Air Force base in Makassar, South Sulawesi, said on Thursday.
Speaking on the sidelines of the visit of Air Force Chief Marshal Subandrio at Hasanuddin Air Force base, Iko Putro said the Sukhoi fighter planes were now conducting routine fly-past exercises.
"Two units of the Russian-made jet-fighters are now ready as we have been conducting daily flight exercises for general purposes as well as for the TNI anniversary," he said.
Air Force Chief Subandrio had earlier hoped the Air Force would be able to demonstrate three Sukhois, not only two, at the TNI anniversary celebration next month.
The Air Force has acquired four Sukhoi fighter planes since 2003. They were demonstrated the last time during the 59th anniversary of the TNI in Jakarta in 2004.
The four jet-fighters have been absent from TNI anniversaries since 2004, and two of them are expected to perform again during the 63rd TNI anniversary in October in Surabaya.
