Female Korean-American completes training with Korean baseball club
SEOUL, Sept. 26 (Yonhap) -- An ethnic-Korean member of the U.S. national women's baseball squad completed a special two-day workout Friday with a South Korean professional club, an official said.
The workout by Jane Uh at Kia Tigers was not a tryout despite media reports
suggesting otherwise, but a chance for the 18-year-old to have her skills
"examined" by the team based in the city of Gwangju, about 280 kilometers south
of Seoul, said Lee Seok-bum.
Lee, a Tigers spokesman, said that even though Uh has proven to be a resilient
player with outstanding fundamentals, it is unlikely she will be admitted into
the men's team as she had hoped.
"She is aggressive and has a strong determination to win," Lee said on the phone,
quoting a batting coach who has overseen her. "But considering her muscular
strength, it appears difficult for her to be allowed into the South Korean
league."
Uh, who is from California and has sought tryouts with South Korean and Israeli
clubs since last year, batted .500 and was a regular shortstop for her U.S. team
at the Women's Baseball World Cup tournament in Japan last month.
She started playing baseball at age 11 and joined the U.S. women's baseball squad
in 2006. She has been given chances to train with South Korean university teams
since her graduation from high school in June, according to her family.
