M'SIA'S JUSCO, TESCO REMOVE PRODUCTS SUSPECTED TO BE MELAMINE CONTAMINATED OFF SHELVES

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 26 (Bernama) -- The Tesco and Jaya Jusco
hypermarket chains have removed products suspected to be melamine contaminated off their shelves in an effort to protect consumers.

Tesco public relations manager Tasrene Azmil said the company had
voluntarily removed five product brands the moment news of the contamination
surfaced.

"We did not want to take any risk. For instance, we called Nestle to
confirm that their dairy products come from New Zealand. Our suppliers who were
unable to tell us their product sources or did not get back to us had their
products removed from our shelves.

"Currently we are also working closely with the Health Ministry and are
cooperating as much as we can. We follow their advice and even before the
Ministry issued any orders, we already took down the products," he explained to
Bernama during a phone interview Thursday.

Jusco public relations manager Zaimarhaini Mohd Said explained that both
Jusco stores and MaxValue supermarkets had taken five products off their
shelves in the interest of consumer safety.

She also explained that the products removed were sent by the respective
suppliers to be tested in laboratories to ensure the products were not
contaminated.

However, both Tesco and Jusco confirmed that they did not suffer any
losses due to this episode.
