MP: Turkish parliament not expected to ratify Zurich protocol

Azerbaijan, Baku, Nov.3 / Trend M. Aliyev / I do not believe that the Zurich protocol (on the normalization of the Turkish-Armenian relations) may be submitted for ratification to the Turkish parliament, Turkish MP Muharram Ince, who is on visit to Baku, told journalists on Thursday. "Turkish parliament will not take a decision that can harm the fraternal relations between Turkey and Azerbaijan. It is impossible to exert pressure on Turkey, as Turkey is a strong state," Ince said commenting on the possibility of pressure on Turkey over the Armenian-Turkish relations. Turkish and Armenian foreign ministers Ahmet Davutoglu and Edward Nalbandian signed the Ankara-Yerevan protocols in Zurich Oct. 10. But the protocols were not ratified in the parliaments. Diplomatic relations between Armenia and Turkey were broken due to Armenian claims of an alleged genocide and its occupation of Azerbaijani lands. Their border closed in 1993.
