Turkey welcomes democratic, peaceful elections in Tunisia

ANKARA (A.A) - October 28, 2011 - Turkey welcomed on Friday that elections in Tunisia were held in a democratic and peaceful atmosphere with a wide participation.
Turkey's Foreign Ministry released a statement in which it wished that elections would be beneficial to Tunisian people.
"Elections, the transparency and fairness of which was confirmed by international observers, constitute a historic step taken for establishment of democracy in Tunisia," the statement said.
The statement said Turkey wished this step would be a model for other regional countries which were undergoing a transition process, and expressed Turkey's belief that all political actors in Tunisia would act in line with democratic legitimacy and national compromise after a national founder parliament was established.
In the statement, the ministry said Turkey had supported social change and democratic transformation efforts in Tunisia from the outset, contributed to preparations for Tunisian elections and sent 10 observers to monitor elections.
The ministry said Turkey would continue to support democratic transformation process in Tunisia.
Tunisia's electoral commission officially declared earlier on Friday Ennahda party as winner of Tunisia's election, taking 41.47 percent of the vote and 90 of 217 seats in an assembly that will write a new constitution.
