Minister: No need to cut Bangkok roads for flood drainage

BANGKOK, October 28 (TNA) - Thai Transport Minister Air Chief Marshal Sukumpol Suwanatat initially concluded on Friday that there is no need to cut roads in Bangkok's eastern side for quicker drainages of floodwater to the sea, as proposed by a group of private engineers.
Air Chief Marshal Sukumpol, who has been assigned by Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra to study the possibility of the proposed plan, told reporters after inspecting the targeted areas that there are several canals in the capital's eastern zones where upstream water can pass through the sea without any barrier or blockade, including roads.
According to the transport minister, he, therefore, considers that there is no need to implement the proposed plan, under which five targeted roads, including Nimitmai, Suwintawong, Pracha Ruamjai, Ruam Pattana and Rat Uthit, will be cut through to facilitate underground drainage.
The Thai transport minister acknowledged what he sees necessary now is to urgently clear weeds and wastes in the canals for the incoming upstream water, saying that his ministry is reporting the field study's results to the prime minister by Friday evening. (TNA)
