Thai PM launches operations to speed up floodwater drainage
BANGKOK, October 16 (TNA) - More than 1,000 motor-boats from both public and private agencies on Sunday voluntarily joined in operations to propel water from three main rivers into the sea to relieve the flooding.
Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra Sunday morning presided over the launch of an operation at Phra Nangklao Bridge in Nonthaburi Province. Some 500 motor-boats were taking part in the operation to propel the water from the Chao Phraya River into the Gulf of Thailand.
They included tug boats, passenger boats, ferries, small boats, long-tailed boats, speedboats and Jet Ski.
Yingluck said the operations were also carried out in Bang Pakong and Tha Chin Rivers. They are expected to propel as much as 50 million cubic meters of water per day, she said.
According to the Thai premier, some 926 motor-boats conducted the operation on 50 locations in the Chao Phraya River, while similar activities were carried out by 121 motor-boats at 13 spots in the Bang Pakong River, and by 102 motor-boats at 15 locations in the Tha Chin River.
Yingluck said so far 56 provinces have been affected by flooding following a month-long downpours, noting that many Thais have been made homeless and are facing food shortage. (TNA)
