Bangkok Governor voices concern about potential flooding in Northern Bangkok
BANGKOK, October 16 (TNA) - Bangkok governor M.R. Sukhumbhand Paribatra has expressed his concerned over potential flooding in northern areas of Bangkok after water level in Sai Mai District keeps rising following the opening of the water sluice gate in Khlong Nueng Canal.
Sukhumbhand confirmed Sunday that the Irrigation Department decided to open the sluice gate at Khlong Nueng Canal, a move which he said would consequently cause a daily rise of level of Khlong Hok Wa canal by two centimeter. He noted that the water will also flow into eastern parts of the capital city.
The Bangkok Governor said the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) is requesting the Irrigation Department to close the water sluice gate as it might cause severe flooding in Rangsit area of Pathum Thani Province, which might also affect the northern Bangkok.
M.R. Sukhumbhand said the BMA has asked the military to build 1-meter-high sandbag walls in Sai Mai District, especially in areas adjacent to Khlong Hok Wa Canal. He noted that authorizes will make the floodwalls higher if the water level increases there. (TNA)
