Floods a main worry for Bangkokians
BANGKOK, October 16 (TNA) - Floods are still a major worry for Thais living in Bangkok’s outskirts and its metropolitan region. Eastern Bangkok as well as Nonthaburi and Pathum Thani Provinces that are adjacent to the capital city are still under flood waters.
The flooding has already inundated five eastern and five western Bangkok districts. Nevertheless, water levels of canals inside Bangkok’s floodwalls remain below flood stage.
Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra, meanwhile, launched another attempt to speed up the flow of Chao Phraya River out to the sea Sunday morning. Some 1,000 motor boats were in place at Phra Nangklao Bridge to accelerate to push the water out into the Gulf of Thailand.
Over in Phichit Province, many communities have remained isolated; one month after the disaster first hit the province. The flood waters remain deep and become dirty as they have not been drained off. Apart from shortages of food, drinking water and medical supplies, the flooding has also caused health problems to local people.
Meanwhile, Ang Thong Province is still under up to 2 meters of water after a dyke collapsed. Rescued workers are working around the clock to evacuate flood victims to safe places.
In Buri Ram Province, Mat River in Lam Plai Mat District has been swollen with runoff from Nakhon Ratchasima Province and its tributaries. The overflowing river has flooded local roads and bridges, making them impassable to all kinds of vehicles. (TNA)
