Japanese investors keep production bases in Thailand despite floods

BANGKOK, October 15 (TNA) - Japanese investors have announced that they will stand alongside Thailand and the Thai people and will keep their production bases in the country despite the ongoing flooding crisis.

Payungsak Chartsuthipol, Chairman of the Federation of Thai Industries (FTI), said that the Japanese investors echoed their determination during an FTI meeting in Bangkok on Friday, in which representatives from the Japanese Chamber of Commerce and the Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO) took part.

Payungsak revealed he had informed the Japanese investors that the Thai government and the military are doing their best to mitigate flooding in Thailand's major industrial estates in the central Ayutthaya Province; while the Japanese investors said they have rehabilitation plans ready for the inundated industrial estates, involving hiring sub-contractors to drain out floodwater and implementing long-term, resilient flood prevention measures, namely building high concrete floodwalls.

Regarding problems in the wake of the current floods, such as the expected mass unemployment in Ayutthaya for at least 3-10 months, especially for out-sourced employees who make up some 30 per cent of the local workforce, Payungsak said that the FTI will support the recovery of the affected factories.

Meanwhile, JETRO President Setsuo luchi insisted despite the flooding, Japanese investors have not planned to shift out their production bases from Thailand, as the Thai economy has remained as one of Japan's best overseas manufacturing locations, apart from long-standing business ties between Bangkok and Tokyo.

The JETRO President noted, however, that what Japanese entrepreneurs need now is more access to accurate and updated English news reports on Thailand's inundations; while the Board of Investments of Thailand (BOI) and the Industrial Estate Authority of Thailand (IEAT) will be acting as official information centres for foreign investors.
