Thai authority confirms safety in Rangsit area
BANGKOK, October 14 (TNA) - Thai Defence Minister General Yuthasak Sasiprapa assured on Friday that Rangsit, a prime area of Bangkok's suburban Pathum Thani Province, has remained safe from floods, but people need to be prepared.
General Yuthasak also assured that the dredging of five main canals in Bangkok to facilitate water drainage will be finished within five days, as the task has already been 50 per cent completed and the repair of a 30-meter-long section of a dyke at the Bang Pa-in Industrial Estate in the central Ayutthaya Province will be completed by Friday.
General Yuthasak acknowledged, however, that the repair of the Khlong Ban Phrao Water Gate in Pathum Thani had not been successful because water currents were too strong and soil was too soft; thus, materials installed to block water were wiped off; so, workers will be, instead, applying the technique which recently resulted in the successful repair of the Bang Chomsri Water Gate in Sing Buri Province, after equipment sent from Sing Buri arrive at the Khlong Ban Phrao Water Gate by Friday evening.
As a precaution, the Thai defence minister said that military camps are ready to provide shelters for people affected by floods, citing the Adisorn Camp in the central Saraburi Province and the Jiraprawat Camp in the lower northern Nakhon Sawan Province, which can accommodate thousands of flood victims, as an example.
Thai Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra is scheduled to hold a new meeting of agencies concerned Friday afternoon to discuss the updated water situation and preparations of hospitals in Bangkok and other provinces to cope with any emergency.
Meanwhile, Thai Justice Minister Police General Pracha Promnog, in his capacity as the Director of the government's Flood Relief Operation Centre, ensured people at a press conference that Bangkok will not be affected by any serious inundation, as runoffs from upstream areas appear to be under control now.
