HOUSE TO VERIFY ISC'S EFFECTIVENESS

Jakarta, Sept 25 (ANTARA) - The House of Representatives (DPR) will pay close attention to the effectiveness of the Integrated Supply Chain (ISC) formed by state oil company PT Pertamina to fight oil mafias, a spokesman said.
"It is a corporate policy of Pertamina but we are going to evaluate its effectiveness in overcoming the problem," Airlangga Hartarto, chairman of the House's Commission IV which deals with energy affairs, said at the legislative building here on Thursday.
Airlangga said the ISC's effectiveness could obviously not be judged without first giving it an opportunity to operate.
"Let the system become operational first and we will see its effectiveness later," Airlangga said, adding that the House Commission IV in principle supported the efforts to improve the management of the oil business.
Meanwhile, Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Purnomo Yusgiantoro said ISC was fully the policy of Pertamina.
"ISC was formed in the framework of efforts to ensure the safety of oil tenders," Purnomo said, adding that ISC was not directly related to his ministry's policies as it was one of Pertamina's corporate policies.
Earlier, Energy Watch Executive Director Mamit Setiawan had cast doubt on the merits of Pertmaina's ISC in ensuring transparency if the mechanism of crude oil exports and in combating oil mafias in Indonesia.
According to Mamit, the formation of ISC was not the best possible solution to the problem of oil business administration in Indonesia so long as its independence was not guaranteed.
"We are suspicious about the formation of ISC because it will only be a legitimization of efforts to protect Pertamina's business interests," Mamit said.
