Thai government races against floods

BANGKOK, October 13 (TNA) - The Thai government has been racing against feared inundations in Greater Bangkok, assigning army troops to speed up dredging new canals to expedite relenting floodwater from upstream areas to the sea.

Accompanied by Thai Army Chief General Prayuth Chan-ocha, Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra made an aerial survey and inspection of the updated water situation and drainage routes in the central region, from the Chao Phraya Dam in the Chainat Province to the Ta Chin River in the Samut Sakhon Province to the sea.

The Pheu Thai premier said that she has assigned the Royal Thai Army to accelerate dredging the new canals over the next 5-6 days to help swiftly release approaching floodwater from upstream areas to the sea to prevent or relieve Greater Bangkok from floods, at least the city's inner areas.

Meanwhile, General Prayuth insisted that his army troops have been expediting the dredging of 3-4 canals, from the central Suphan Buri to Samut Sakhon Provinces, some 10-kilometre distance, in due course. (TNA)
