Thai PM seeks US model on flood relief

BANGKOK, October 13 (TNA) - Thai Foreign Minister Surapong Tovichakchaikul said on Thursday Thai Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra has spoken her wish to seek a flood relief model from the United States, and asks for U.S. helicopters and experts to be deployed in Thailand for flood relief operations.

Minister Surapong told reporters that many countries have been offering cash and necessities to help Thailand, and that foreign ambassadors will be visiting the government’s flood relief operations centre next week.

Minister Surapong said that governments of the U.S. and China have praised the centre for its work and agreed that flood relief operations had to be swift to boost confidence and foreign investments in Thailand.

Meanwhile, Chavanond Intarakomalyasut, spokesman of Thailand’s opposition Democrat Party, urged the government to exercise the executive decree for administration in emergency situations in some flooded areas.

Chavanond reasoned that many critically flooded locations such as Pathum Thani and Ayutthaya provinces still lacked many kinds of supplies for flood relief operations.

He said that with the executive decree imposed, the government could exercise its authority to launch decisive and effective flood relief operations instead of allowing different organizations to work in varying directions. (TNA)
