Bangkok governor affirms flood situation “under control”
BANGKOK, October 13 (TNA) - As the high tide started in Bangkok on Thursday, the Bangkok governor insisted the city administration can still protect the capital from floods. However, he asked the people to dismiss flooding rumours and promised he will be the first one to inform them when Bangkok is in a flooding crisis.
On Thursday morning, Bangkok governor M.R. Sukhumbhand Paribatra boarded a boat to inspect Bangkok’s dykes in the Chao Phraya river from the Bang Pho pier to the Pak Khlong Talad pier.
He reported that with the high tide, the river water level has peaked at 2.06 metres from the mean sea level at the Pak Khlong Talad water monitoring station. However, the level did not raise a concern because it is well below the crest of Bangkok’s dykes.
Meanwhile, the flow of the Chao Phraya river has remained at 3,700 cubic meters per second in Bang Sai district of Ayutthaya province.
As the high tide will continue from October 15 to 18, the Bangkok governor also advised people living outside Bangkok’s floodwalls to prepare for evacuation. He said he expects this round of high tide to peak at 2.30 metres. He also guaranteed that the areas of Bangkok that were never flooded before would not be affected but people in the areas that used to be flooded should be prepared. (TNA)
