Samsung's smart TV apps downloads top 10 mln

SEOUL, Oct. 13 (Yonhap) -- Samsung Electonics Co., one of the world's leading home appliance makers, said Thursday that total downloads from its smart TV applications store have surpassed the 10 million mark.
The company said there were an average of 50,000 downloads per day from its dedicated apps store, which began service in Feb. 2010. It also said that during that 19-month period, 1,000 different applications for high-end TV sets had been downloaded by consumers.
The store was heralded as the first smart TV apps store in the world. Smart TV refers to the integration of the Internet, computers and set-top boxes into a single high-performance consumer product.
Of the applications downloaded so far, YouTube, Google Maps and AccuWeather were popular in overseas markets, while game content such as Dynamic Bowling was in high demand in South Korea, it said.
The company added that in order to put more content on its apps store, it has arranged partnerships with video-on-demand suppliers including Time Warner and Hulu and publishing firm Axel Springer.
Samsung, in addition, said it is providing software development kits to people interested in making marketable applications and is also hosting apps contests around the world.
