Mekong River’s Naga fireballs draw tourists

NONG KHAI, October 12 (TNA) - Tourists have arrived in Thailand’s Nong Khai Province to see the “bung fai paya nak” or Naga fireball phenomenon which is expected to bubble up from the Mekong River Wednesday evening.

The end of the Buddhist Lent is celebrated in annually in Thailand’s northeastern province of Nong Khai and the Naga fireball phenomenon normally takes place at Phon Phisai and Ratana Wapi Districts. This year’s highlights include a merit-making ceremony, and a prayer ceremony to deities at Huai Luang creek, a place believed to be dwelled by the Nagas or serpent deities. Illuminated boat processions will also be launched during the night.

Tourists reportedly continued to arrive at the districts since morning, making their hotel reservations by the Mekong River, particularly at Wat Thai temple in Phon Phisai District’s Jumpol Sub-district.

This year the number of tourists, however, is lower than usual due to flood crisis in Thailand and because the end of the Buddhist Lent this year falls on a weekday. Most visitors come from the provinces that are not affected by the disaster; some are the first-time viewers of the phenomenon. (TNA)
