Governor: All areas in Bangkok now at risk of floods

BANGKOK, October 12 (TNA) - Bangkok Governor M.R. Sukhumbhand Paribatra acknowledged on Wednesday that all areas in the Thai capital are now at risk of floods, as all parties concerned remain on high alert 24 hours to prevent inundations in the city.

M.R. Sukhumbhand told reporters when inspecting the water situation in Taweewattana District, partly hit by floods now, that the Taweewattana Canal will be able to cater more water, as high as some 50 centimetres, and his Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) is speeding up draining incoming water from Bangkok's suburban Nonthaburi and Pathum Thani Provinces in the Taweewattana Canal to the Maha Sawadi Canal, as resolved during a meeting of agencies concerned, chaired by Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra, on Tuesday.

According to the Bangkok governor, the BMA is working together with the Royal Thai Army and the Royal Thai Navy to erect more sand-bag dikes along the Taweewattana and the Maha Sawadi Canals, from 2.75 metres high to 3.25 metres high.

The governor noted that more downpours are expected during October 16-18; so, the BMA is accelerating draining water in both the Saen Sab and Prawet Canals to the main Chao Praya and to the sea, through the Pra Khanong Tunnel, asking all boats to refrain from sailing through the two canals in the capital from October 12-13 and insisting that the water drainage will not affect people living along the two canals.
