All industrial estates in Ayutthaya closed, workers evacuated

AYUTTHAYA, October 12 (TNA) - All industrial estates in the central Ayutthaya Province, one of Thailand's hardest-flood-hit areas, have now been closed and workers evacuated, as parties concerned are working hard to prevent the only remaining Ban Wah or Hi-Tech Industrial Estate from inundations.
Montha Pranutnorapan, Governor of the Industrial Estate Authority of Thailand (IEAT), said that the latest inspection by IEAT officials on Wednesday morning found that all plants inside the Ban Wah or Hi-Tech Industrial Estate have already suspended their production and have all their workers evacuated to safe places, as flows of water from upstream areas, which have heavily-flooded and forced the temporary closure of all other industrial estates, are expected to reach the remaining industrial estate in Ayutthaya by Wednesday evening.
Thai Deputy Prime Minister Kittirat Na-Ranong, who is also the Commerce Minister, was overseeing the implementation of flood prevention measures at the Ban Wah Industrial Estate, in which 143 plants, mostly the manufacturers of automobile and electronic parts are located.
Meanwhile, IEAT held a meeting with several industrial estates to discuss impacts from the country's ongoing flooding crisis and the prevention of remaining industrial sites from approaching floodwater, particularly those now being at risk in the eastern side of Bangkok, including the Lat Krabang, the Wellgrow, the Anyathani and the Bang Plee Industrial Estates, where a total of over 500 manufacturing plants are located.
